Sump Pump Repair
A pump already struggling on an ordinary week has nothing left for the next coastal storm, so have it looked at before the tide and the rain arrive together.
When this becomes an emergency
- A pump running more or less without pause since the last nor'easter.
- Standing water in a crawlspace with the pump humming and nothing leaving the discharge.
- A pit filling on a week with no rain in the forecast at all.
- Short cycling every few seconds instead of a steady on and off.
What a pro does
Sump pumps do a different job on Delmarva than they do in a basement state. North of the canal, around Wilmington and Brandywine Hundred, they sit in genuine basements much as they would across the line in Pennsylvania. Everywhere south of it, from Middletown down to Chincoteague, a pump is usually working a crawlspace pit or a perimeter drain in a house with no basement at all, and what it fights is groundwater rather than roof runoff. That distinction sets the duty cycle. A nor'easter pushing water up the bay for three days, or a spring tide backing into a tax ditch behind Dagsboro, lifts the water table under the entire lot, so the pump runs for days on end instead of clearing a pit and shutting off. The float and the check valve get checked first, then where the discharge actually ends, because a line dumping into a flat yard or a ditch that's already at capacity sends the same water straight back to the pit. A motor that has cycled nonstop through a wet week gets tested against the incoming rate rather than judged on whether it still switches on.
