What a pro does

What people call a sewer line means two different things on Delmarva. In Salisbury, Dover or Ocean City it's a lateral running out to a municipal main; on most rural property it's a short building sewer running to a septic tank, and the failure modes barely overlap. Either way the work opens with a camera rather than a shovel. Sandy coastal-plain soil behaves nothing like the clay that cracks pipe inland: it doesn't heave, but once a joint opens, sand washes into the line with every rain and leaves a void outside the pipe that lets the run settle further. On camera that reads as a low section holding water with grit banked along the bottom. High groundwater adds a second problem, since a cracked line 3 or 4 feet down sits below the water table for much of the year and takes water in as readily as it lets water out, which is how a system that never backed up starts running constantly. Roots from the loblolly pine that covers so much of the Eastern Shore find the same openings. Once the camera locates the real failure, the options run from a spot repair to lining the existing pipe to replacing the whole run.

Frequently asked questions

The pipe leaving the house looks similar and gets inspected the same way, but where it ends changes everything afterward. A municipal lateral ends at a main the town maintains. A building sewer on a septic property ends at a tank the owner is responsible for, so a backup there raises questions about the tank and the field that never arise on town sewer.
Sand moves. Clay soils crack pipe by swelling and shrinking; sand does its damage after the pipe is already open, washing in through the crack and leaving a hollow behind it. The line then settles into that hollow and develops a low spot, so a modest joint failure becomes a section that holds standing water.
It can, and on this peninsula it frequently does. Where the water table sits within a few feet of the surface, a cracked or offset joint below it lets groundwater infiltrate, loading a septic tank or a town system with water that was never meant to be in there. Camera work during a wet stretch usually makes it plain.
Not always. Where the pipe is intact enough to host a liner, the work goes through existing access points with very little excavation. A collapsed section, or a run that has settled badly along most of its length, generally still has to be opened up, and the camera inspection is what decides which case applies.
