A 24,000-grain softener fits 4 people at about 9 grains per gallon. Regenerates about every 8 days at this use.

water heater: scale risk

Hard water coats the tank bottom or element within a couple of years, which makes the heater run longer and shortens its life. A plumber flushes the tank and checks the anode when a softener goes in.

  • Hardness 9 gpg (hard) = 9 gpg to remove.
  • About 2,700 grains a day and 18,900 a week at 75 gallons per person per day.
  • One grain per gallon is 17.1 mg/L of hardness as calcium carbonate.

How softener sizing works

Hardness classes

The US Geological Survey groups water by dissolved calcium and magnesium: soft below 60 mg/L, moderately hard to 120, hard to 180 and very hard above that. One grain per gallon is 17.1 mg/L, which is how softeners are rated.

The sizing math

Daily grains are people, times about 75 gallons a day each, times the hardness in grains per gallon, with iron added at about 5 grains per part per million. A softener is sized so it regenerates about once a week, so the weekly total picks the capacity class: 24,000, 32,000, 40,000, 48,000 or 64,000 grains.

Why the water heater cares

Scale settles where water is heated. In a tank heater it builds on the bottom and the element, so the heater runs longer to make the same hot water; in a tankless unit it narrows the heat exchanger. A plumber flushes the heater when a softener goes in.

Common questions

How do I know my water hardness?

Your water utility publishes it in the annual water quality report, usually in mg/L or grains per gallon. On a well, a test kit or a plumber’s test gives the number. Spotty glasses and white crust on faucets are the everyday signs of hard water.

What size water softener does a family of four need?

At 10 grains per gallon, a family of four uses about 3,000 grains a day and 21,000 a week, which lands in the 24,000-grain class. Harder water or iron pushes it to 32,000 or 40,000.

Does iron change the size?

Yes. Iron uses up softener capacity fast, at roughly 5 grains per part per million, and above about 3 ppm a softener alone is the wrong tool; a plumber adds an iron filter ahead of it.

Is softened water hard on a water heater?

No. Softened water leaves the tank scale-free. The one change is that the anode rod can wear a little faster, which a plumber checks at the annual flush.
